Two big events occurred almost simultaneously two millennium ago. In AD 80, the Coliseum, one of the greatest architectural works in human history, was completed, while in AD79, Mount Vesuvius erupted and caused one of the most horrendous disasters in history, the overnight burying and destruction of Pompeii. The two events are precious windows that offer a comprehensive glimpse into the politics, culture, economy, and society of Roman Empire (27BC–AD1453) that transcended time and spatial barriers.
